Included With Your New Contact Site

Everything you need to get started today and grow in the future.

Domain Registration

The Domain is what you would think of as the name of the place you’re creating. We’ll try to get you the exact name you want, but it’s a good idea to have several names to try out, in case the one you want is taken.

Unless you have a specific reason in mind to use a different top-level domain extension, we’ll try to get the .com if it’s available. If not, the .net is what we’ll want. There’s no technical difference in most of these, but it’s just easier on people to remember one of these. Like a phone number, you want one that is easy to remember.

Domains cannot be bought. Instead, everyone leases their domain name from ICANN through a Registrar. In our case, we’ll use Godaddy. All their servers are located in the USA. If you don’t have one already, we’ll setup an account in your name.

Some folks offering services like these will register your domain in their name. We won’t do that. You will have complete control over your registration as well as management of your domain renewals in the future.

Domain leases may be bought in lengths of 1-10 years. Sometimes they are offered free with a new hosting account, and if available, we will take advantage of that.
Leases must be renewed before expiration or your website will not appear on the internet. Per year domain renewal costs between $10 and $20. Longer terms offer some savings.
12 Months Hosting

If you think about the domain name as the address, you can think of the hosting as the actual place where your site lives. We will use Basic Hosting with cPanel, as this gives you the best options for expansion in the future, without costing too much right away.

Most people will want to setup hosting under their own account. For a Contact Site, the Basic Hosting options have more than enough storage and bandwidth. As your site grows you may want to add resources, but for a site of this size, you won’t need it.

One of the often overlooked benefits of having your own hosting is the ability to create and manage your own email server. Included with the Contact Site package is the setup of up to 5 email addresses.

A couple of things you will want to consider are updates and security. You will want to schedule some time on a regular basis to check for updates and install them. You will also want to monitor security on the site. See the section on Maintenance for more information.

A managed hosting option is available for an additional annual fee. If you choose this, I will maintain your site on a daily basis, making sure updates are applied as well as monitoring security and acting against anyone who tries to hack your site.

Basic hosting renewal  on your account should cost no more than $45/yr. Hosting provides a server for your website and your email.
Site Design

Your site will be designed using WordPress, one of the most widely used platforms on the internet. WordPress is free to use, but there are several other programs that are not. In particular, we will use Enfold as a design layer, and Wordfence as a security layer. Enfold has a one-time cost, and Wordfence must be renewed annually.

The Contact Site design is limited to one page with the goal of encouraging and making contact with you as easy as possible, in all the places you might be found. We can include as many or as few links as you want for people to click. We can include up to three main paragraphs just below the slider where you may put any information you think needs to be included. We can include a few paragraphs below that. Click the links to the sample sites for an example.

You should expect your new site to be finished and live on the internet in no more than a week, once I have the images and information you want to be included. If you need help finding good images, ask me to help and I will be glad to find you several to choose from. My only goal is to help you create a site you will love.

If your needs have already outgrown a Contact site such as this, I’d be happy to hear from you for something a little more complex.
Maintenance

When your site is delivered I will go over the basics of operating a WordPress site. (It’s easier than you might think!) You will learn about Wordfence security, and writing/editing and publishing pages using Enfold. You will also receive a pdf copy of EasyWP Guide. In it are over 140 pages on every topic you might ever need to know to operate a WordPress site. You’ll learn about the various parts of a WordPress site that need to be updated, and how to check for and install the updates. You will also learn how to backup your site using both WordPress itself and the account controls you may have in your hosting account.

Maintaining a website of any kind must become a regular habit, or your website will become compromised. No level of security is impermeable, but by using vigilance and regular scheduling of scans and other monitoring tools your website can be reasonably protected.

You may choose to hire someone to maintain your website for you. There are many WordPress professionals you can choose from, including me. I have been working with this platform for nearly fifteen years. Currently I manage several hosting accounts for both small businesses and private individuals. I would be happy to quote a price for managing your new site as well.

*Everyone receives the ebook via email. Face-to-face support limited to Reidsville, NC and immediate surrounding area.
Planning Your Site

Planning how you want your site to look includes anything you see in your “mind’s eye” when you think about your website. You don’t have to be too specific, but it’s a good idea to have a few things in mind at the start. Here are a few things to get you started. You’re sure to think of more.

  1. Color Scheme
    1. Backgrounds You can choose from literally millions of colors. It’s a good idea not to have more than 3 background colors.
    2. Color of text Make certain that the text color contrasts sharply with the background color.
  2. Text Style
    1. Which font do you want to use? The look of the text can give your site a serious look or a playful look, or anything else you want.
    2. How large is the text going to be? Remember that many people will be using their phone, and your site will respond to their screen size.
  3. Slider Image
    1. Remember that this is a backdrop for the Contact Buttons. Both contrasting and complimentary colors will work.
    2. Very large images are best, as they can be cropped to a perfect size. Enlarging small images sometimes makes them blurry.

Be as general or specific as you like, or you may instead simply give me the slider image and let me choose a color and font scheme to follow. Once I have an idea of your vision, I’ll work with you to turn that into a working website you can be proud to call your own.
